MONROVIA, CA — Officials have confirmed that 3,011 people across Los Angeles County have been infected with the coronavirus, and 54 have died. Ten of those deaths were first reported Tuesday. They included a Los Angeles Health care worker and four people under the age of 65. Tuesday also saw 548 new cases of the virus confirmed. One concern facing the county is the confirmation of coronavirus outbreaks at 11 different nursing homes. Seven additional homes are also reporting at least one case of the virus. Coronavirus is especially dangerous to patients over 60. Of the patients infected by the virus Tuesday, 553 were over 65, and 594 people required hospitalization. The ongoing outbreak has lead local leaders to issue public safety orders banning private or public gatherings. Beaches and hiking trails have also been closed, as have any businesses deemed non-essential during the crisis. To slow the spread of the disease, people are also asked to stay home unless they're leaving to buy absolute necessities, and they are advised to practice social distancing by keeping a safe distance of about six feet between themselves and everyone else. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including: Stay home when you are sick.Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.Follow CDC's recommendations for using a facemask.CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.Related Stories: LA Health Care Worker Dies Of Coronavrus As New Cases Spike Cedars-Sinai To Test Drug Remdesivir On Some Coronavirus Patients
