Description
MALVERN, PA — Phones, tablets, computers, video game systems, TVs; the list goes on for how we spend our time in front of screens. And experts say that dedication to screens can lead to increased loneliness and isolation.
An expert on the topic will discuss what makes teens and young adults become isolated at an upcoming event at Great Valley High School in Malvern.
Dr. Caroline Fenkel, LCSW, will talk with parents about how we can encourage young people to stop isolating.
The effects of social isolation on mental health are overwhelmingly negative, and ongoing loneliness and isolation can also create physical symptoms.
"Parents frequently tell us that they have to beg their teens to get out of the house and see their friends, instead of holding them back and implementing curfews," Fenkel said. "And when you talk to them about isolating, they talk about it like it is a drug."
Research shows that chronic loneliness has the following effects:
Increased stress response and cortisol levelsLess restful and less restorative sleepNegative impact on physical health; more detrimental for overall health than obesity, smoking, or high blood pressureGreater risk of suicideMore alcohol and drug useDepression and anxietyPoor self-care, such as bathing, grooming, and nutritionDecrease in positive outlookFenkel's presentation will address the causes of chronic isolation and will guide parents in ways they can help their teens to break the isolation cycle.
