In 2013, President Brack Obama created the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran that guaranteed access to outside observers to ensure Iran was not developing a program towards nuclear weapons. It was working. In 2018, Trump discarded this effective tool, thus ending our observation of Iran developing weapons grade nuclear material. When we had access, we knew Iran was complying with the deal. A huge portion of their nuclear program was dismantled, and our own inspectors concluded: "The country is significantly further from a nuclear weapon than it was when the deal came into force." We know that in the three- and one-half years since Trump announced the U.S withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Tehran has resumed its enrichment of uranium, restarted research and development on advanced centrifuges, and expanded its stockpile of nuclear fuel. Not only did Trump's brash plan antagonize our allies who worked tirelessly with us to develop the deal, without certified inspectors, no one here knows for sure what Iran has.
