Poetry In New York hosted by Galinsky featuring Sharrif Simmons, Bina Sharif, & Galinsky each performing live at Book Club Bar. New York's hottest curated poetry session continues on March 17th at 8pm, with powerhouse artists Sharrif Simmons and Bina Sharif, and host Galinsky. First poet hits at 8:15pm so get here early! More about Bina Sharif: New York theater and visual artist Bina Sharif has written and directed more than 20 plays, performed at Theater for The New City, Mabou Mines, ABC No Rio, and other venues in New York City. As actress, she has performed in her own works and in works by others, including "Epidog" by Lee Breuer. Other directors and producers Sharif has worked with include Fernando Arabal, Maria Irene Fornes, and Robert Patrick. She is the recipient of grants from Franklin Furnace, Theater for The New City, and the NYSCA. His writing career spans three decades. His education as a poet started at U.C.LA. (University on the Corner of Lenox Avenue) at the famed Liberation Bookstore on 131st St. & Lenox in Harlem, New York. Founded by his Grandaunt Una Mulzac, the bookstore served the Harlem community for over 35 years, 5 of which saw him as a book salesman and avid reader. Poetry chose him the night he saw Sonia Sanchez read at the Schomburg Center for Black Research located a few blocks away on 135th st. and Lenox. He is founder of GalinskyCoaching.com, is head speaker coach at TEDxTeen, and works with teenagers in Rikers Island Jail and jails and prisons throughout NY State through Literacy for Incarcerated Teens and the Kite Zine. His one-person play "The Bench, A Homeless Love Story" played ten sold out weeks at Off Broadway's Cherry Lane Theatre and was extended for another thirty weeks at East Village Playhouse and in Hollywood at the Hudson Guild Theater. Galinsky most recently wrote and directed “Based On a True Story”, six short plays that included notable actors: Laura San Giacomo, Roger Guenveur Smith, Gary Cole, and Shola Adewusi. He runs a live poetry night, “Poetry in New York” the third Thursday of each month,at Book Club Bar in Alphabet City NY.
