ABOUT THE BOOK While on a drive with her parents, a young Chinese-American girl is upset and embarrassed when they suddenly stop to harvest wild watercress from the side of the road. She doesn’t understand why they have to get their “dinner from a ditch” until her mother shares a memory from China that helps her understand the importance of watercress to her family and appreciate the food that they have foraged together. "Wang’s moving poetry paired with—and precisely laid out on—Chin’s masterfully detailed illustrations capture both an authentic Midwestern American landscape and a very Chinese American family, together infusing a single event with multiple layers laden with emotion, memory, and significance. “Understated, deep, and heart-rending—bring tissues." —Kirkus starred review ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR Jason Chin has written and illustrated six books— and provided illustrations for six others, including Watercress. His 2017 book Grand Canyon received an Orbis Pictus Award, a Caldecott Honor, and a Sibert Honor. Watercress won the 2022 Caldecott Medal, the Asian/Pacific American Award, a Newbery Honor, and a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor. He grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts and now lives with his family in Burlington, Vermont. **This is an in-person event at the Shelburne Town Hall in Shelburne, VT.
