SWAMPSCOTT, MA — The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has honored Swampscott High three-sport athlete and Super Bowl champion Cole Hamernick as its Student-Athlete of the Month for February 2022. Hamernick, an AP student who has also volunteered his time as a soccer coach for special needs children, is a standout football, track and lacrosse athlete who helped the Big Blue to a Division 5 Super Bowl victory against North Reading at Gillette Stadium in December. "Unmatched work ethic and ability to unite his peers set him apart from the rest," Swampscott track and field coach Brian Kirkland said. "Very few people can positively transform a team's demeanor in the manner he did." Hamernick was a captain and two-way starter for the football team at receiver and cornerback and was a Northeastern Conference All-Star. He volunteers at youth lacrosse and youth football clinics and camps, as well as with the North Shore Rovers, where he helps special needs children with one-on-one soccer instruction and other assistance. Lacrosse coach Geoffrey Beckett said: "Cole is the first to volunteer to help out in any way he can with the youth or younger players on the team." An AP student, Hamernick serves as a teacher's assistant in Becket's honors algebra class and is also excels in physics. He plans to study science and engineering in college. "Cole represents all of the values that we hope to instill in a Swampscott High School student," Swampscott High Principal Dennis Kohut said. "He has served for four years as a leader and a tremendous role model for our younger students." He also volunteered with The Wall That Heals moving Vietnam War Memorial when it made a stop Nahant this past summer. "Cole is a hard-working and determined student-athlete," Swampscott Athletic Director Kelly Wolff said. "He is a role model and a positive influence for his teammates both on the field, in the classroom and in the stands cheering for his teammates. "I know Cole will do outstanding things next year as he moves on to college." (Scott Souza is a Patch field editor covering Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Peabody, Salem and Swampscott.
