MEDFORD, NY — A 78-year-old Farmingville man — one of two believed to suffer a medical event prior to car crashes on Friday afternoon — was seriously injured in Medford, Suffolk police said. Vincent Alese was driving a 2020 Subaru in the parking lot of Target on Horseblock Road, when he lost control of the vehicle and it struck an unoccupied pickup truck at about 3:41 p.m., according to police. Alese was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue for treatment of serious injuries, said police, adding that detectives believe he may have suffered "a medical event prior to the crash." The Subaru was impounded for a safety check, according to police. A 61-year-old New Hyde Park man was killed earlier in the afternoon in Patchogue after his sport-utility vehicle veered off of Sunrise Highway, Suffolk police said. Glenn Schifano was driving a 2010 Honda CR-V westbound on Sunrise Highway Service Road when it "veered off the roadway and struck a fence" on Chestnut Avenue, said police, adding that it came to a stop "in a driveway on Sinn Street" just after 2 p.m. Schifano was transported by North Patchogue Fire Department ambulance to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said. Detectives believe that Schifano may also have suffered "a medical event," according to police. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call the 6th Squad at 631-854-8652.
