Take a screen Why build a center for cultural and spiritual study: Traditional education affirms the dignity of indigenous communities and their culture. A culture without dignity and power is easily exploited. Officials in support of deforesting the Amazon deny indigenous cultures the right to education and access to entitled funding in attempt to weaken them. Their goal is to remove indigenous land rights and exploit the resources of the rainforest. This project of building a center for cultural and spiritual study is much more than constructing a building. It will serve to educate the children, inspire the community, and advance Yawanawa culture. This project represents the resurgence of Yawanawa tradition and culture. To this day many youth do not fully speak their native language because Portuguese was forced onto them by colonizers. The building of a center for cultural and spiritual study will offer children and teens the space to learn and strengthen their cultural practices. Yawakanah Yawanawa, daughter of Chief Isku Kua Yawanawa. Iskutima Yawanawa Isku Kua Yawanawa: Chief of Nova Esperança village For many years, Isku Kua supported his father, Chief Nixiwaka, in managing tribal affairs. Today as Chief of the Nova Esperança village, he takes care of 300 people. Isku Kua represents the younger generation and has gone through the highest spiritual initiations in the tradition. He is also a talented musician and guitarist, who has adapted many traditional songs to the guitar, and travels frequently to Europe and the United States to share the culture and spirituality of his people. Isku's knowledge of his culture deepens every day as a result of his deep commitment to his studies. His presence and conduct of the Uni ceremony impress even the Yawanawa elders.
