Amber Alert: Girl Safe, Father Detained After Struggle

SAN JOSE, CA — A 2-year-old girl is safe and her father is in custody Monday afternoon, hours after authorities issued an Amber Alert for their whereabouts. The father, accused of assaulting and stabbing the girl's mother in San Jose, was captured following a public struggle in a gas station parking lot in Cambria, San Luis Obispo County, according to KTVU. Victor Magana, 24, was confronted by several customers in a Shell parking lot, KTVU reported. Video taken at the scene appears to show Magana smashing the windshield of his SUV using a rock, telling bystanders that he was trying to free his daughter after locking his keys in the car. A gas station supervisor put Magana in a chokehold until police arrived, according to KTVU. Magana's 2-year-old daughter Bethanie Carraza is safe, according to the California Highway Patrol. Police responded shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday to a report of a woman screaming in the 500 block of S. 11th St. in San Jose, Officer Gina Tepoorten said. Police found a woman suffering from at least one stab wound. She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Magana left the scene with the couple's daughter and is considered the suspect, Tepoorten said. An Amber Alert was issued at 2:17 a.m. for the father and daughter. Magana was considered "armed and dangerous," according to the CHP. The public was asked to be on the lookout for a light green 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with a California license plate of 7XJX025.
