Federal Transportation Mask Mandate Extended, Applies To RI Buses

PROVIDENCE, RI — Masks may not be required anymore in most places in Rhode Island, but make sure you have one in your pocket if you plan to use any form of public transportation. This week, the Transportation Security Administration again extended the federal mandate, which has been in effect for more than a year. The federal mandate applies to "all transportation networks throughout the United States, including at airports, onboard commercial aircraft, on over-the-road buses, and on commuter bus and rail systems," the TSA said, which includes Rhode Island Public Transit Authority buses. The order was extended through April 18. "RIPTA is committed to following TSA guidelines to keep our employees and passengers safe while we continue to navigate through this pandemic," RIPTA CEO Scott Avedisian said. Masks are not required for children under the age of two, or for people with a disability that prevents them from safely wearing a face covering. Qualified exemptions must be obtained before getting on the bus by calling RIPTA customer service at 401-784-9500, ext. 2012.
