CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire State Police are asking for the public to stay safe on Thanksgiving Day when traveling in or outside of the state. Lt. Mary Bonilla said AAA is expecting a lot of vehicular travel for 2020 although it will be lower than prior years due to the new coronavirus pandemic. Still, it is expected to be the busiest travel weekend of the year for Granite Staters. "It should be noted that statistically, traffic-related fatalities increase around the holidays," she said. "However, traffic crashes can be reduced significantly by being mindful of traffic safety tips." Some of those tips include planning ahead, slowing down, not driving while distracted, and wearing a seatbelt. "Don't drink and drive," Bonilla said. "Those choosing to consume alcohol should designate a sober driver in advance, should use a taxi or public transportation, should call a sober friend or family member for a ride, or should give another person their keys for the day/night." Keeping both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road to limit distraction will also help. Put down the electronic devices, she said. Speed kills, Bonilla added, "So please slow down." Your family and friends would much rather have you arrive late than not there at all. Buckling up and limiting aggressive driving also improve safety. Tailgating and other issues can lead to crashes and road rage incidents. Make sure the vehicle in front of a vehicle is a safe distance away, state police advise. "Public safety is always our number one priority," Bonilla said. "We are asking for everyone's help in partnering to keep our roadways safe while enjoying the holiday. On behalf of Colonel Nathan Noyes and the men and women of the New Hampshire Sate Police, please have a very safe and Happy Thanksgiving." Got a news tip? Send it to [email protected].
