(CBS 46 News)A section of a parking deck at a Walmart shopping center along Howell Mill Road had its structural integrity compromised by a stuck box truck Friday. The truck damaged three concrete pillars inside the store's multi-level parking deck, according to officials with Atlanta Fire Rescue. After removing all the other vehicles in the section, firefighters were able to help shore up the parking deck with braces. Monday, a crew will be brought in to remove the truck and replace the beams, repairs that engineers estimate could cost as much as $1.5 million. (FOX 5 Atlanta)Two bake sales organized by students at Intown Community School in Atlanta raised over $2,400 to help Ukrainian refugees Thursday. According to the school, proceeds from the bake sales will benefit the World Central Kitchen, which is helping and serving Ukrainian refugees. In the fall, Intown students organized a bake sale for World Relief for Afghanistan refugees, earning $1,500. This time, students decided two bake sales would make twice as much and set up shop at their school and in the Leafmore neighborhood. Participants ranging from second- to seventh-graders made signs as well as a variety of goodies. "As you can see," said Stephanie Donlan, parent of two Intown students, "they increased their proceeds by adding the second bake sale location." (11Alive.com WXIA)Since January 2021, over 40 burglaries targeting local studios in the film and television production industry have resulted in at least $3 million worth of equipment reported stolen, authorities estimate. In an effort to protect an ever-burgeoning $4 billion industry in Georgia, the Atlanta City Council on Monday voted to create a task force that will lead a multi-jurisdictional crackdown on the thefts. The crimes have occurred in the jurisdictions of 13 metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies, each of which is investigating its set of burglaries independently. The new task force, which will be coordinated through the Atlanta Police Department, will bring all the impacted agencies together so investigators can collaborate. (Free: Fox 5 Atlanta; Subscription: The Atlanta Journal Constitution) Annual inflation in metro Atlanta is far above the national average, climbing into double-digits last month, thanks to the region's housing, energy and food costs. And prices are rising even faster this month, driven by skyrocketing oil and gas costs following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Thursday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the metro area's February consumer price index, calculated from a collection of goods and services that typically dominate household spending, was 10.6% higher than a year earlier. Only Phoenix, with an annual inflation rate of 10.9%, had a higher rise in consumer prices than Atlanta among major cities surveyed. 1.
