Car Break-In Spree In Millbrae: Officials Issue Safety Tips

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — Following a recent spike of vehicular burglaries in Millbrae and other Peninsula cities, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office shared safety reminders to possibly help prevent locals from becoming crime victims. In Millbrae, 17 auto burglaries were reported between Nov. 4 and Nov. 5 near Skyline and Hillcrest boulevards and Dumont Court and Crestview Drive areas, the agency said. In another affected city, Half Moon Bay, in less than 24 hours, from 5 p.m. Wednesday through 9 a.m. Thursday, the department logged 13 car break-ins in the El Granada area, with other cases reported nearby, officials said. To help keep your belongings and vehicles safe, deputies recommend: Leaving nothing valuable in a car.Closing all windows and locking all doors when leaving your vehicle.Parking in well-lit, populated areas, if possible.Be aware of surroundings and trust your instincts. "If something doesn't feel right, find another place to park," officials said.Avoid parking next to occupied vehicles.Do not leave garage-door openers in parked vehicles. Lock vehicles even if parked in a garage. Don't assume dark-tinted windows will hide valuables, as thieves often use flashlights to see through the tint and inside the car.As a final reminder, the agency said anyone who sees suspicious activity or individuals is asked to call 911.
