Press release from Austin ISD - Announcement: March 10, 2022 By Scott Thomas There are two solutions that could drastically ease Austin ISD's recapture payments without significantly altering the state's funding formula, and district leaders are hoping the Lege will listen. Why it matters: Recent headlines have shown how Austin ISD pays more than three times as much in recapture payments to the state than any other district. Yes, but: The state legislature is reluctant to change the complex formulas that govern recapture. The first is a discount for providing a payment early or on time. The second is for the state to reimburse Austin ISD the money that it pays into Social Security. But why: Basically, Austin ISD is one of the very, very few school districts that pays both Social Security AND into the Teacher Retirement System.
