ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving slapping, a garage fire, a phone theft, suspicious activity, illegal dumping and phone scams. Here is information from the latest police reports: Slapping A person told police that she was hanging out on the top level of the Addison parking deck, 135 N. Addison, about 3:30 p.m. Saturday when she was confronted about an incident involving a male friend. The suspect slapped her in the face. An investigation is pending. Garage fire The fire department responded to a garage fire about 7 a.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of North Emroy Avenue. An officer saw smoke emitting from the detached garage. Two cars were inside. Firefighters put out the fire. Missing phone A resident in the 900 block of Cedar told police that he left a cellphone and wallet in the back seat of a Lyft car about 7 p.m. Saturday. He contacted Lyft about the loss. The Lyft driver checked his car for the items, but could not find them. The resident's phone has since lost power, and he is unable to track its location. Phone theft A woman told police that someone removed her son's cellphone from his unattended backpack between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday at Fischer Elementary School, 888 N. Wilson. The principal later found the phone in another student's locker. An investigation is pending. Suspicious activity An employee at Extended Stay America, 550 W. Grand Ave., told police about seeing someone parked suspiciously in the parking lot about 11 a.m. Tuesday. The sliding door of the minivan was open and parked next to two parked cars. The suspect was on the ground between the cars and started pounding on the cars with a hammer-type object. When confronted, the man stopped working and drove away. An investigation is pending. He may have been trying to steal catalytic converters from the cars, a crime that has become more common. The man was described as black, in his 40s or 50s, having a scruffy beard, and wearing a black knit cap, black jacket and work pants. Illegal dumping A discarded roll of carpet and other items were found in a dumpster Tuesday at Butterfield Towers, 260 E. Butterfield Road. An officer called a suspect, who admitted to dumping the items. Charges are pending. Phone scams A resident in the 100 block of North York Street told police a person posing as a Medicare employee called and asked for the resident's Medicare number on March 3. The resident gave the information. The resident contacted Medicare to report the incident. A resident in the 400 block of Alexander Boulevard told police Wednesday that a person called posing as an employee for Nicor Gas and offered to reduce the resident's rates. The caller asked for the resident's Social Security number, and the resident provided it. An officer provided the resident with information on how to protect himself against identity theft. Chronic nuisance A household in the 300 block of South West Avenue was listed as a chronic nuisance Wednesday. Fall A person tripped and fell on raised pavement and suffered a bruised kneecap and a severe scape to her left elbow about 2 p.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of East First Street. Medics examined her injuries, but she refused further treatment. Wedding band found A person found a wedding band about 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 900 block of Kent Avenue. The person gave it to the police department, which placed it into evidence.
