Press release from the Clark County Government:
June 25, 2020
Clark County is currently accepting applications from residents interested in representing Nevada State Assembly District 17 for the next several months.
The seat was held by Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson, who passed away in May 2019.
The application deadline for the State Assembly seat is noon on Tuesday, June 30, 2020. Completed applications may be emailed to Katie Walpole at [email protected], or delivered to Katie Walpole in the County Manager's Office on the 6th floor of the Clark County Government Center at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway in downtown Las Vegas.
Under state law, the County Commission fills vacancies in the state Legislature. Eligible appointees must reside in the district they are seeking to represent and be of the same political party as the resigning member. Thompson was a Democrat.
The appointee will serve until the election in November, when District 17 voters select their new representative to the assembly. Anyone interested in applying for the office is encouraged to confirm whether they reside in State Assembly District 17 through the state Legislature's website. See a map of Assembly District 17 to confirm that you meet the residential requirement.
Once the application period closes, County staff will review the submitted applications to ensure that candidates meet the qualifications for the office. Then a list of qualified applicants and their applications will be forwarded to members of the County Commission, who are expected to appoint someone to fill the office during their July 7 commission meeting.
