EAST ISLIP, NY — An East Islip Eagle Scout is making history. Robert Martin Camlet, of East Islip, will become the 100th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. He will officially be sworn in with this title at an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony, on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School. The Suffolk County Community College freshman successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on October 20. To become an Eagle Scout, one must earn 21 merit badges. According to a press release, 13 are specifically "Eagle required." A Scout must progress through six rank advancements: Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle. However, Robert earned more than the minimum requirement and received a total of 24 merit badges. He has also has logged in 27.8 hours of community service hours through the troop. According to a press release, being a scout runs in Robert's blood. Robert's father, John Camlet Sr. is an assistant scoutmaster of Troop 205, and his brother, John Camlet Jr. is also a fellow scout. Robert has spent more than 100 hours of community service with his family "adopting" a section in front of the local elementary school. "Being a Boy Scout is more than dressing up in a uniform and going on campouts every month," he said. "It is dedicating your life to a pact that you will carry with you for the rest of your childhood and adult life." Another requirement to become an Eagle Scout is to plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. For his Eagle Scout service project, Robert planned, developed, constructed, rejuvenated and replanted the 9/11 memorial along with the east garden in front of the John F. Kennedy Elementary School. According to a press release, Robert has served Troop 205 as a patrol leader, and assistant patrol leader. He was also a troop guide, where he assists his younger Scouts in their rank advancements. "The Rank of Eagle Scout is not only a title, but rather it's a lifestyle and way of life," he said. A recent graduate of East Islip High School, Robert held his place on the high honor roll consistently throughout his academic career. His other notable achievements include Outstanding Academic Achievement of Visual Arts in 2021; he also held the positions of secretary, vice-president, and president of the National Art Honor Society of the course of three years. He was named "social butterfly" by his fellow classmates during his senior year. Robert is currently a freshman in the honors program at Suffolk County Community College. He plans to complete his core requirements and apply to four-year colleges next year, to complete his bachelor's degree.
