Description
Press release from the City of Spokane:
2022-03-10
On 03-09-22 around 11am, school officials received information a student at Willard Elementary was in possession of a firearm at the school. Staff subsequently discovered a loaded revolver in the 12-year-old's backpack.
SPD responded, and the student was transported to juvenile detention for the charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of dangerous weapons on school grounds.
At this point it does not appear any students were threatened with the firearm, nor is there a definitive motive for the student's conduct.
Under the possession of dangerous weapons on school facilities statute (RCW 9.41.280) a person arrested for bringing a firearm onto school grounds cannot be released within seventy-two hours unless they have been evaluated by a designated crisis responder (courts are granted exceptions under certain circumstances).
