'Latina Empowerment' Shines In Newark; Inspiring Women Praised

NEWARK, NJ — A trailblazing elected official. An Emmy Award-winning television journalist. An executive at Horizon Blue Cross & Blue Shield. And a branch manager at Popular Bank. These are some of the women in Essex County who are strengthening their communities – and who recently earned a big round of applause at a "Latina Empowerment Brunch" in Newark. Earlier this month, Newark city officials held a brunch event to give some well-deserved kudos to a group of high-achieving women. Belleville Deputy Mayor Naomy De Peña served as keynote speaker, and panelists included Nilda Rosario of radio station Mega 97.9, Maylene Colom, director of marketing for Horizon Blue Cross & Blue Shield, and Karen Rodriguez, a branch manager for Popular Bank. Local students were also invited to the brunch, giving them a chance to network with inspirational figures in their community. Jacqueline Quiles, deputy mayor of community engagement in Newark, was among the city officials present at the brunch. "Some of our region's greatest Latina advocates and activists came here today to spread a message of hope, empowerment and action to our residents," Quiles said. "They inspire us with their work and it is a privilege to recognize them." Newark Mayor Ras Baraka also praised those present at the March 1 event. "We are proud to recognize Newark's Latina community, which makes up a vast portion of our city's strength," Baraka said. "Today's panelists and speakers are achievers in different fields – entertainment, business, government, and the law. They are role models and inspirations for present and future generations of Latinas, and we are honored to have them with us today."
