NOVATO, CA — A competitive Ukrainian youth tennis player has found sanctuary in Marin.
Ira Shostakovich, 11, fled her war-torn country and is staying with relatives in Novato, The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Shostakovich, a relative of renowned Soviet-era Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich according to the report, played competitively for a private academy in Dnipro, her central Ukrainian hometown.
Ira aspires to play professionally, she told The Chronicle through a translator.
A family friend with an active social media following is helping the girl find an instructor, and several big names have responded including Andy Roddick, the world's top-ranked player, The Chronicle reports.
