'Pierspective' Exhibit Covers Manhattan Beach Pier's 100 Years

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — You'll be getting a lot of "Pierspective" all month-long thanks to the Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation Department's exhibit. The exhibit, which goes live today, is a toast to one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the Manhattan Beach Pier, which turned 100 years old on July 5. All 156 submissions will be included in the city's virtual exhibit, the first one ever produced by the city, according to Eric Brinkman, acting cultural arts supervisor. The online exhibit is now available. A physical exhibit, installed in the city's Cultural Arts Center, will include the 75 juried works. That installation is expected to be completed by Monday, July 20 with walkthrough tour made available online. Those 75 pieces will be photographed and compiled in a commemorative book. "In addition to the book, we will be filming a walkthrough of the exhibition and hopefully conducting some artist interviews as well," Eric Brinkman, told Manhattan Beach Patch. "Our goal is to keep rolling out content through the month of July to keep the exhibition feeling fresh." The 75 juried art pieces were selected based on artistic merit, creativity and how the piece relates to the pier," said Brinkman. "We encouraged the community to take liberty in their approach to depicting the pier to allow for a greater variety of work." Artworks could be submitted in a variety of mediums, including photography, paintings, drawings, ceramics, and sculptures, with some sort of element of the pier. The exhibit includes the history of the pier. City staff worked with Gary McAuley of the Manhattan Beach Historical Society to integrate that history into the exhibit.
