FALLS TOWNSHIP, PA — Local government officials joined brass from Wawa on Tuesday to break ground on a first-of-its kind store in Falls Township.
The Wawa, at 549 West Trenton Rd. at the intersection with Pine Grove Road, will be a drive-through. Company officials said Tuesday they are shooting to open by December.
At Tuesday's ceremony, Wawa gave bagged lunches to healthcare workers and first responders and presented two checks, for $1,000 each, to St. Francis Cabrini Church and Mary's Cupboard, who both run food banks.
Wawa officials say the new store design is part the company's efforts to experiment with alternatives to its traditional store models, particularly in light of safety precautions during the coronavirus pandemic.
A similar Wawa currently is under construction in Westhampton, N.J.
"We are hoping to learn from the layout, workflow and traffic flow at this location," Terri Micklin, Wawa's director of construction, said when the store was first announced in July. "We continue to explore alternatives for longer term application to our stores post-COVID-19."
The drive-through will focus on fresh food as well as typical convenience store items. Curbside pickup service also will be available, the company said. A similar Wawa currently is under construction in Westhampton, N.J.
