PENNSYLVANIA — In hopes of avoiding the downward financial spiral that has put retailers such as Sears and Kmart essentially out of business, Pennsylvania Kohl's stores are about to undergo major changes. Kohl's is de-emphasizing its identity as a department store and will emphasize the addition of Sephora mini-shops in the majority of its locations. The retailer also hopes to open 100 new stores in the next four years about half the size of its typical stores, expand its dress business and enhance its loyalty reward program. The commitment to Sephora, which sells personal care and beauty products, is particularly significant. Kohl's hopes to have Sephora shops in more than 850 locations and grow that brand into a $2 billion business. "Kohl's is undergoing a significant transformation of our business model and brand to be the retailer for the active and casual lifestyle," Kohl's CEO Michelle Gass said in a statement. "We have fundamentally restructured our business." She also told investors during an online meeting that the moves "represent a complete reinvention of our business model and our brand," CNBC reported. Kohl's currently has more than 1,100 stores in 49 states, including 51 in Pennsylvania.
