LA GRANGE, IL — Lyons Township High School is planning an event next month that will focus on eliminating hate and hate language, according to a news release.
The school plans a virtual forum at 7 p.m. April 5, led by Tyrone Howard, a UCLA professor who researches race and culture.
Many students learn behaviors and language from many sources such as social media and peers, "who are not always conducive for a healthy and inclusive learning environment," the release said.
Howard plans to share how parents and caregivers can respond to inappropriate comments about race, gender, religion, sexual orientation and other social identities.
Howard, a native of Compton, California, has a number of research specialties, including race, culture, access and educational opportunity for marginalized student groups.
He is the author of several bestselling books, including "Why Race and Culture Matters in Schools" and "All Students Must Thrive."
He has served as a classroom teacher in Compton.
