Press release from the City of Missoula: October 21, 2020 Check out https://www.engagemissoula.com/missoula-subdivision-regulations-review for the draft document and additional background material. Please submit ideas in the space available on this webpage. We are welcoming ideas through October 30th. The City has been reviewing the current subdivision and subdivision exemption (especially townhome exemption development (TED)) process and rules, to understand ways they could be improved. Reviewing the current process and rules will help to give us ideas on ways to provide increased predictability for everyone engaged in the development process while also ensuring that our high community standards and response to public health and safety concerns (like consideration of potential areas of flooding and ensuring access for emergency service) remain in place. Over the past several months the City, with consultants Design Workshop, has been analyzing current city development regulations and processes, along with the state laws that establish the local foundation. We have also been reviewing case studies of several existing projects and conducted a best practices analysis to inform this process. Additionally, we've collected input from community citizens and experts in the field and review agencies. New subdivisions and TED projects may occur in any parts of the City that can accommodate new development while following the zoning restrictions of the area. They accommodate new areas for development or address new ways that development may fit within the existing landscape of our community. Exploring these processes can help to provide much-needed new housing supply and address issues of affordability. Through this comprehensive review, the City will have a set of recommendations for how to change the rules and a set of priorities for determining which rules should be revised. A draft recommendations report, outlining possible next steps, is available for your review. This press release was produced by the City of Missoula. The views expressed here are the author's own.
