LAKEWOOD, OH — A Cuyahoga County Grand Jury indicted a 42-year-old after police accused him of attacking a Lakewood store clerk with a "machete-type" knife. Chawn Cloyd, 42, from Akron, faces charges of aggravated robbery, felonious assault and robbery. He has a pre-trial court appearance on March 16, according to Cleveland 19. On Feb. 10, an employee at a Lakewood convenience store confronted a possible shoplifter, Cloyd, and tried to escort him out of the building, police said, and a fight erupted. Cloyd pulled out a large, "machete-style" knife and started swinging it at the employee, a witness told police. Cloyd cut the employee's face, giving him a 3 to 4 inch gash, police added. After cutting the clerk, Cloyd ran from the store, police said. The injured employee was taken to Fairview Hospital for medical attention. Police said the employee's wound was not life threatening. A knife was recovered at the store by officers, a Lakewood Police Department spokesperson said. Cloyd was later found at the Lakewood Emergency Department, where he was using the bathroom to wash blood off of himself, police said. Officers took him into custody at the medical facility.
