RIVERSIDE, IL — A man who told officers he was just trying to get home from work was arrested on charges of DUI and drug possession Thursday in Riverside, police said. He was accused of going 98 mph in a 35 mph zone.
About 1:30 a.m., an officer stopped Tumas J. Norwood, 43, of Chicago, on suspicion of speeding on 26th Street from Harlem Avenue, according to a Riverside police news release.
The officer smelled alcohol on Norwood's breath and found an open bottle of Remy Martin alcohol beneath the driver's seat, police said. In a breath test, Norwood was reported as blowing a .11, which is over the legal limit.
Later, once Norwood was in custody, officers recovered eight separate foil-wrapped bags containing PCP inside the back of his hoodie, the release said.
Norwood's criminal history lists 31 prior charges that include drugs, traffic offenses, battery, fleeing police and aggravated assault, according to the news release.
"If this is any indication of what will occur over the holidays, I'd strongly urge motorists to plan ahead, get rides to and from their destinations and to use a ride-share if they plan on drinking," Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said in a statement. "There's absolutely no excuse for impaired driving. It's a 100 percent preventable crime and with the rise of ride-share companies, people can get home safely."
