If you spent any time downtown in the 80s into the 90s, chances are you may have come across a large barrel chested man with a saxophone who goes by the handle of Little Howling Wolf, aka James Pobeiga. He was something of a fixture in downtown Chicago during those times, busking with his horn. Passersby were entertained with his gravelly voice and junkyard blues compositions year round, sometimes with icicles dangling from his hoary beard. He is now the subject of a major motion picture. And by major motion picture- I mean self funded documentary film. That’s right, the big top. And we need you! So it begs the question: Do you or anyone you know have memories of this man?? Personal stories, news clippings, photos, recordings - We are gathering materials to weave together a story worthy of this mythical man. I suspect that many of you out there have had an experience with Wolf. Perhaps you have a family member that was there. It never hurts to ask. At 6 foot 9 inches tall he’s a memorable person, hard to forget. He’s a gentle giant too and he’s still around. Play your cards right and you just might get to meet him once more. There is also an archive of his 45s we have access to for the musically inclined. FYI -He graduated from Argo high school in approximately ’67, ’68, or’69. It’s possible that someone you know may have even gone to a dance with him or played football with him. We’re simply looking at every angle to flesh out this story. He was a certified diving instructor and Merchant Marine among other things. He played a pirate and entertained children. He was on the cover of Chicago Flash mag in a tux and white gloves with his sax. Wolf is truly larger than life and we urge you to respond to this post with any knowledge you may have.
