Description

MALIBU, CA — The Malibu City Council approved a measure Monday to amend the municipal code to ban smoking in city parks and open spaces. The measure was approved unanimously and without comment. Final adoption is set for July 12. Though smoking is already prohibited in most parts of the city – including the Malibu Pier, public right of way, and public events – it has never been banned in all open spaces. But as city staff prepare to open a new temporary skate park, they realized that the current municipal code does not prohibit electronic smoking devices or include parks or open spaces as prohibited spaces. A new ordinance expected to be approved July 13 will amend that. The move comes as the city also asks all of its citizens to wear masks outdoors to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a rule that also serves as a sort of de facto anti-smoking measure.
