Description
An evening of great Broadway music and ethnic-themes music in time with Saint Patrick's Day will be featured! The AVB Community Band will present its next concert titled "Highlights & Lowlands" on Monday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at the Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center (PAC), 2391 S. Ridge Road in Ashwaubenon. The evening will feature “highlights of Broadway” and a variety of ethnic-themed music. Vocalists for the evening are returning favorites, Emily and Kent Paulsen. Doors to the Ashwaubenon PAC open at 6 p.m. As always, the concert is free to the public because of the generosity of sponsors, which this month is Schroeder’s Flowers in Allouez. Donations will be accepted following the concert. Mike Ajango is director of the 75-member AVB Community Band. Paul Oleksy is associate director. “March is typically the month that we celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, but there are so many other ethnic groups that could be equally celebrated. So I decided to incorporate multiple ethnic tunes for this concert,” said Ajango. “Plus we’re featuring some of the very best of Broadway.” “Our vocalists are perfect for this special evening of music,” he continued. “We’re fortunate to be bringing back Emily and Kent Paulsen to perform during our 40th anniversary season,” said Ajango. Emily is a UW-Green Bay musical theater graduate and has performed with Let Me Be Frank Productions, Daddy D Productions, Play-by-Play, Calvary Players and, most notably, she portrayed Eva Peron in the St. Norbert College Summer Music Theater production of “Evita.” Emily also sings with “Project Pink Band: Pink Floyd Tribute” and other area bands. Kent is busy in his many musical capacities at St. Norbert College in De Pere, serving as the artistic director and conductor of the Dudley Birder Chorale, director of the Knights on Broadway, music director of the Summer Music Theater, executive director of the Youth Orchestra Program and is an adjunct instructor of music. He is also worship and music coordinator, senior choir director and organist at Calvary Lutheran Church in Green Bay. The AVB Community Band opens its evening of music with “Broadway Showstoppers,” featuring the rousing “That’s Entertainment.” Kent will sing “Bring Him Home” from “Les Miserables,” while Emily will sing “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess.” Together, the Paulsens will join the AVB Community Band on “West Side Story Medley,” “Danny Boy” and “The Golden Age of Broadway” featuring the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. The band will also perform “The Water is Wide,” “One Thousand Cranes,” “Celebration Tribalesque” and “March of the Belgian Paratroopers.” In the lobby prior to the show and during intermission, the Ashwaubenon High School “Encore” competitive show choir will be selling Seroogy’s candy bars as well as other choir items as a fundraiser to support the choir, which also does outreach in the community. Formerly known as the Allouez Village Band, the organization rebranded for its 40th anniversary season as the “All Volunteer Band” (AVB) to better reflect its membership from numerous communities in the area. The final two concerts of the 2021-2022 season will also be performed at the Ashwaubenon PAC. “Oldies But Goodies” will be performed on TUESDAY, April 19, and “You’ve Got to Be Kidding!” will be performed on Monday, May 16. The May concert will feature the annual “Spring Fling” collection of household cleaning products and personal care items conducted prior to the concert in the lobby by AmVets Post 11 on behalf of residents of the Veterans Manor Apartments in Green Bay.
