Description
Join us for La Florida Missions: Spaces of Globalization, Resistance, and Transformation. The Spanish Florida missions were established in 1587 and lasted for more than a century and a half. Outstanding scholars in precontact and early modern Florida anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, ethnohistory, linguistics, literature, and theology will convene in this symposium to share their efforts in documenting the story and struggles of the indigenous peoples of Florida as they were drawn into a tumultuous web of colonial missionary and global connectivities that changed their world forever. The symposium is co-sponsored by the University of Miami's Libraries, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, Martha S. Weeks Chair in Latin American Studies, Center for the Humanities, Department of History, Department of Anthropology, and the Joseph Carter Memorial Fund. This symposium is free and open to the public. Please note that personal bags, food, and drinks are not allowed in the Kislak Center at the University of Miami.
