Joining them on tour are Los Angeles-based R&B specters, Night Beats and Austin, TX-based experimental dream pop band Holy Wave. Tickets for this all ages event are $28.00 (ADVANCE). WITCH were the biggest rock band in Zambia in the 1970s and spearheaded a new genre dubbed Zamrock. Blending African rhythms and bush village songs with garage rock inspired by imports from the country’s former British colonisers, they were dubbed their country’s own Beatles. At the peak of their popularity, the band were renowned for incendiary, seven-hour live shows and often needed police to keep fans at bay while their lead singer Emmanuel ‘Jagari’ Chanda – whose name is an Africanisation of Mick Jagger’s – riled up crowds by stage diving from balconies and dancing manically as WITCH’s blend of psychedelic rock and African rhythms permeated the surrounding atmosphere. Jagari is the only surviving member from WITCH’s original incarnation. The Aids epidemic, which would cause the deaths of up to 1.4 million people across Zambia by 2010, is believed to have claimed each one of the men Jagari still calls “brothers”. Largely unknown outside of their home country, WITCH finally got the exposure they deserved when Now Again Records reissued their entire discography in 2012. This allowed Jagari to play outside Africa for the first time and for a new generation of fans to discover his music. In 2016 he began a collaboration with Dutch musicians Jacco Gardner and Nic Mauskovic, and together with them, in September 2017 WITCH headed out on its extremely successful first-ever European Tour followed by an equally successful US tour in 2019 and an award winning documentary in 2021. Jagari and WITCH are coming to the U.S. in March for a limited string of tour dates, including appearances at SXSW and Treefort Music Festival. The lineup of the touring band will include Gardner, Mauskovic, and Michael Rault and in addition to their Fort Collins performance, dates include Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Tucson, Albequrque, and Denver.
