The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice presents an evening with The Chantels. The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will hold a fundraising concert featuring the Chantels, a history making 1950‘s all-female doo wop group on June 18th 2022 at Cape Henlopen High School Auditorium for the Performing Arts. This is a once in a lifetime chance to see this ground breaking female doo wop group. The event is the highlight of SDARJ’s Juneteenth weekend celebration. Proceeds from this concert will go to for SDARJ educational programs including scholarships and on-going operations. Chantels and Do-op Music In 1958, The Chantels were the second female group that in broke through the all-male dominated doo wop music scene. One top blog, Music Enthusiast, states, “the greatest female doo wop song is ‘Maybe” by the Chantels. Rolling Sone magazine listed “Maybe” as number 199 out of their 500 greatest songs of all time. Any teenager who heard this song while anticipating their first crush, first slow dance, or first kiss can attest to the power of musical memory. Who wouldn’t like to revisit that? Juneteenth-weekend June 18-19th 2022 Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of enslaved people in the United States at the end of the Civil War. For more than 150 years, African American communities across the country have observed this holiday. Last year, President Biden signed a bill declaring Juneteenths, June 19th a new national holiday. Juneteenth also serves as the celebration of American renewal, a celebration of a new beginning for our nation to reconcile the differences between our lofty goals and aspirations as stated in our constitution and where we are now as a nation. Juneteenth inspires all Americans to all be a better to people and to continue to strive towards the ideals stated in the declaration of independence, that “all men are created equal.”
