Description

Join us for a weekend of camping and giving back to the trail community. Trail Magic is the practice of lending support to long-distance hikers, providing an act of kindness and positive influence on the hiking experience. This practice is common place on the Appalachian Trail, and Blue Blaze is excited to be hosting a Trail Magic Weekend! When and Where: On the weekend of April 23/24, we invite you to join us at Carvers Gap, on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee where the Appalachian Trail crosses 261. This event is open to whomever would like to join us, but to avoid congesting the trail head we will be limiting our group size to 15 people and encouraging ride-sharing. RSVP via Eventbrite is required. Reserve your spot here: (link) (Note: directions for exact location will be provided upon registration) What to bring: All participants are encouraged to bring whatever form of "Trail Magic" they would like- this can be anything from cold soda to pastries to a full-on parking lot BBQ. It is whatever you think hikers might appreciate after several days in the woods with out the luxuries of indoor-living. Upon registration for this event you will receive a list of suggested trail magic to bring but there is no minimum to what you have to provide- we just want you to show up and have a good time. Hiking: Outside of providing trail magic and good times to the hikers that are coming through, you will also be welcome to hike the beautiful trails in this area. From the parking lot, it is an easy hike North to Jane Bald and 360 degree views of the Roan highlands. A slightly more challenging hike to the South will take you to Roan Mountain Shelter, the highest shelter on the Appalachian Trail. Camping: We look forward to providing trail magic on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. We will be car camping in the parking lot here overnight. There is plenty of room for car camping, and limited space for tent camping nearby. You are welcome to join us for both days and car camp with us, or simply join us for Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. If camping, you are required to bring your own camping gear and food. This is not a formal campground, and tow-campers/5th wheels/ other large camping vehicles will have trouble finding a spot. Remember that sub-freezing temperatures and snow aren't uncommon in this area, even in April! There is an outhouse on site, though we can't guarantee it will be open. Leave No Trace and Parking: As with all outdoor recreation, we will be following Leave No Trace principles, packing out all trash and having a minimal impact on our environment (not familiar with LNT? This will be a great time to learn!). This is a popular hiking area and we can expect trail head parking to be very crowded during the day. Showing up as early as possible on Saturday is highly encouraged. If parking is full upon arrival, you may need to leave and come back a few hours later.
