Description
The following letter to the editor does not reflect the views of Sudbury Patch Sudbury's annual Town Election approaches. I am grateful to see many qualified residents running. Thank you, candidates, for offering to do this work on our community's behalf. This year I am watching the races for Goodnow Library Trustees and Lincoln-Sudbury School Committee. Having more candidates than available seats is a good dilemma forcing careful consideration of experiences and qualities to reinforce the skills of each board. For Library Trustees, I plan to vote for Katina Fontes and Jean Nam, and for L-S School Committee, Maura Carty. I am voting Fontes because she has made the pursuit of knowledge and education — and ensuring that those rights are available to all — her life's work. It has been my privilege to serve with Katina on committees and collaborative community projects at two different nonprofits. She is a supportive, inclusive team player. I have observed Katina in leadership roles at each institution, and as a member of the town's DEI Commission, noting her careful decision-making based on thorough, thoughtful research. She would excel as Library Trustee. I am voting Nam because of her finance and fundraising skills. I met Jean while going before the town's FinCom to request funds for a town building project. As a FinCom member Jean absorbed the data and asked tough questions, which I appreciated. She took seriously her charge to allocate town funds well. As the pandemic tested everyone's creative problem solving responses, Jean established The Book Nook to support library operations. It has become a vibrant community asset for all ages. She spent hours, recruited volunteers, carried out the project, and raised funds. Jean will have a solid handle on the library's financial matters. I am voting Carty for L-S School Committee. Maura understands students and school policies. She is my go-to when I have school-related questions. As a fellow Sudbury school parent, I can't remember a school project or function where Maura was not volunteering, elementary through high school years. I have seen Maura work effectively on committees, tracking issues — she is already advocating for Sudbury's children through her service. She will be an asset to the L-S School Committee. Please vote on March 28 and exercise your right to choose candidates who will best represent our town. I trust Fontes and Nam for Library Trustees, and Carty for L-S School Committee. I hope you'll consider giving these candidates your support. —Sally Purrington Hild, Sudbury
