HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Legislative Councilwoman Lesley DeNardis announced Tuesday that she is running to challenge longtime U.S. Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro in Connecticut's 3rd District. DeLauro, a Democrat, has held the seat since 1991. "As I meet and listen to the people of the 3rd District, they have expressed frustration and disappointment with their elected officials in Washington," DeNardis said in a news release. "We have one-party control in Congress and an entrenched incumbent who has been in office for over 30 years. She no longer understands or is in touch with the concerns of Connecticut residents. We need new representation in our district. It is time for a change." DeNardis, a Republican, recently retired after a career in higher education. Before embarking on her run for Congress, she taught Political Science at Sacred Heart University where she also directed the Institute for Public Policy and the Sacred Heart University Poll, according to a news release. DeNardis was elected to the Hamden Legislative Council in November. She is the daughter of Lawrence J. DeNardis, former Congressman and President of the University of New Haven. "Between soaring prices for gas and food, rising crime in our communities and oppressive mandates, all of us feel a sense of loss of control over our lives, our pocketbooks and our children's education," DeNardis said. "There are solutions to many of our problems, but Representative DeLauro draws from the same failed tax and spend approaches that rely on massive amounts of federal dollars making it more difficult for everyone to pay for the rising prices of everyday goods while also subjecting us to trillions more in debt for generations to come." DeNardis called DeLauro a "career politician" who she said symbolizes "much of the discontent Connecticut residents have with our congressional representatives." "DeLauro's lock-step support for the Biden agenda is out of step with what residents want," DeNardis said. "As a foot soldier for the administration, she contributes to our increasing debt and out of control spending that has brought the country to record high inflation. The people have had enough." If elected, DeNardis said she would "restore a commonsense approach to government, stop mindless spending and borrowing, secure our borders, support law enforcement, support parents' rights to have a say in their children's education and most of all restore the freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution. I will give people a voice and say in Washington that they have been lacking for too long."
