HERNDON, VA — Fairfax County's Department of Tax Administration will start collecting property taxes owed to the Town of Herndon under an agreement approved by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday. The new arrangement will allow property owners in the town to receive and pay just one bill for both town and county taxes, rather than two separate bills. A memorandum of understanding outlining the new agreement was adopted by the Herndon Town Council on Feb. 8 before it was approved this week by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. "This agreement creates efficiencies for both the Town of Herndon and Fairfax County — but, more importantly, for real property owners in the town," Herndon Mayor Sheila Olem said in a statement Wednesday. "With just one payment, real estate taxes are paid to both jurisdictions." The new tax billing and collection system will take effect on June 1. The due dates for town real estate taxes, which will now be collected by the county, will remain the same: July 28 for the first half and Dec. 5 for the second half. Under the agreement, the county's Department of Tax Administration will keep one quarter of one percent of real estate taxes it collects on behalf of the town. Fairfax County also will start collecting delinquent taxes from June 1, 2022, going forward. The town will bill for any invoices or past due invoices prior to the2022 tax year. "We are excited to partner with the Town of Herndon on this important initiative and strengthen government efficiency," Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay said. The town said it is notifying major mortgage companies that service property owners in the town about the new tax collection arrangement. Owners who receive tax bills directly will receive a bill in the mail from Fairfax County in June, for taxes owed to both the town and county.
