Man Jumps From Second Floor In Jersey City Fire, Suffers Burns

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A man jumped out of the second floor of a burning building in Jersey City Monday night and suffered burns on his hands and face, a city spokesperson said. That fire occurred Monday at 5:30 p.m. at 14 Manning Ave., on a cobblestone road that contains older housing stock. The man ended up landing on a van in a driveway and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. Wallace-Scalcione said that the Red Cross was helping 12 adults and three children who escaped that blaze. "Firefighters observed heavy fire involving the entire duplex," she said. "Firefighters helped evacuate all occupants. The building was completely destroyed. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the one building." The cause of the fire is being investigated. Second Fire Later that night, the Fire Department had to respond to another fire that left people homeless, this time at 155 Grand St., around 10 p.m. "Upon arrival, firefighters observed a 4-story building attached on both sides with fire on the top floor of the fire building. A second alarm was transmitted due to heavy fire in the cockloft and extension into the Bravo exposure. The fire was quickly brought under control." There was fire and water damage througout that building, and some smoke and water damage to 153 Grand St. The Red Cross is helping at least five adults from both Grand Street buildings.
