Here are the top five stories in Sacramento today: Students in the Sacramento City Unified School District will continue to have to mask up indoors after the state lifts its mandate on March 12. Officials at a board of education meeting on Tuesday decided to require masks through at least spring break, saying Sacramento County needs to be in the "low transmission" category of COVID-19 spread for four continuous weeks. Also at Tuesday's meeting, the district decided to delay enforcement of its student vaccine mandate until after the school year ends in June. The district said Wednesday that 93.82% of SCUSD students and 99% of district staff members had met its requirement by submitting their vaccination status or registering for routine COVID-19 testing. (ABC10.com KXTV) Sacramento County probation officers have found themselves the victims of an overnight crime — a thief has targeted gas tanks in the face of rising prices. They say someone broke into their secured parking lot along Del Paso Boulevard in the early morning hours and stole gasoline from the county vehicles parked there. The thief is accused of using a handheld power tool to drill holes in the gasoline tanks underneath the vehicles in an effort to steal fuel. Up to nine county probation cars were targeted. (Good Day Sacramento)Rising gas prices have had one positive effect. Initial data shows more riders have been boarding SacRT busses in recent months, paying $2.50 on average, as gas prices continue to break records. "We're starting to see that ridership tick up," said Jessica Gonzalez, a spokesperson for SacRT. "We're not sure if it's solely because of gas prices. It could be people starting to return back to the office, so we're keeping a close eye on that." According to Gonzalez, preliminary data shows a 10% increase in ridership this year, continuing into the month of March. (ABC10.com KXTV)A Sacramento judge at a detention hearing ordered Sherri Papini, the Northern California woman arrested on charges of lying to federal agents about being kidnapped and defrauding the state's victim compensation board of $30,000, to be released on $120,000 bond. She left jail late Tuesday afternoon and ran to waiting family members without making a comment. A preliminary hearing has been set for March 25.
