CREST HILL, IL — John and Amy Schubert, the Crest Hill couple who participated in the U.S. Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021, were sentenced to probation this week for their roles in the crime. According to WJOL, John and Amy Schubert were sentenced to 18 months of probation and ordered each to perform 100 hours of community service. The couple pleaded guilty in federal court to a misdemeanor charge of unlawful entry of a government building. The Chicago Sun-Times also reported that federal prosecutors sought home detention for John and Amy Schubert, while U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson did not believe home detention was necessary given that the Crest Hill residents are in their 60s and 70s. According to the Sun-Times, John Schubert declared at his sentencing, "When I do something wrong, I'm willing to pay the price for what I did. I'm guilty, and I made a mistake." The newspaper reported that Amy Schubert remarked, "I am very sorry for what we did. … I can't just let this opportunity go by and not learn from this. It's been hard to wait for each court appearance, but it's been good because it's given me more time to read things, learn things, not be so one-sided. And I am very sorry." Last July, Patch reported that authorities became aware of a YouTube video with footage from the January breach. Titled, "The Insurrection of The United States Capitol," officials said the video shows a woman wearing a jacket with the text "Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union 422 Joliet IL." According to the complaint against the couple, a search warrant for Amy Schubert's Gmail account showed photos and video of the two at the Capitol on the day of the breach. Illinois Secretary of State records appeared to place Amy Schubert's phone at the Capitol building on the day of the breach as well, authorities said.
