JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE: Performs work necessary to provide a clean and secure environment for zoo animals and zoo visitors; to conduct needed maintenance of facilities, buildings, and equipment. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains, cleans, and performs necessary upkeep of public areas, restrooms, paths and buildings. Participate in various maintenance and construction projects involving a variety of tools and materials. Participate in construction and landscaping projects involving carpentry, plumbing, welding, electrical, digging, hauling, and painting. Conducts repairs and preventive maintenance to vehicles, HVAC, machinery, pumps, filter systems, and other systems. Perform snow removal. Maintains and conducts repairs and improvements to animal exhibit/holding areas and public areas. Actively contributes to positive guest experiences. JOB SPECIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED required. Valid driver’s license. Must have ability to get a Class B CDL license. Advanced knowledge of maintenance and cleaning protocols. Demonstrated knowledge of zoo policies, standards, operations, cleaning, and maintenance techniques. Ability to precisely follow and enforce instructions and safety regulations. Ability to deal politely with visitor questions. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Arrive on time and demonstrate effective time management. Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers. Ability to work a highly flexible schedule – weekend, evening, holiday, and irregular hours may be required. Other tasks as assigned based on needs of the business. PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to regularly walk assigned area several times per day and efficiently enter all enclosures. Strong sensory skills, such as good eyesight, good hearing, and dexterity. Ability to safely handle and operate hand tools, power tools, and other equipment necessary to conduct assigned tasks. Ability to work in Alaska weather extremes. Job will generally be performed outside with moderate to extreme noises, pollens, dusts, and molds. To apply, please visit
