Bridge the Divide is a workshop to facilitate more culturally sensitive relationships between students of color and staff at SB Unified.
In the Santa Barbara Unified School District, 59.96% of students are Latinx, and 67.37% are BIPOC (stats taken from the SBUnified website), yet many feel unwelcomed in their classrooms. When you don’t feel respected or cared for, the initiative to participate from BIPOC students is negatively impacted; they feel less encouraged to put in the effort in their academic efforts. Our goal is to "Bridge the Divide" between BIPOC students and educators in our community to create a more supportive learning environment. This event is open to teachers of all grades, school administration, and student-teachers in Santa Barbara County.
Main events include keynote speakers Veronica X. Valadez and Gabriel A. Orosco of Ehecatl Wind Philosophy. From their website: "Ehecatl Wind Philosophy is a minority-owned company... with the intent of helping school districts close opportunity gaps for students by providing teachers with high-quality professional development grounded in anti-racist, humanizing, critical, and culturally relevant education." Other presentations include oral and written student testimonies and interactive activities.
