TACOMA, WA — The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is hoping the community can pitch in as they try to save four orphaned kittens struggling to survive. According to the Humane Society, all four kittens were found abandoned in an empty lot last Thursday by a good Samaritan who saw they were in need of help, and took them to the Society for treatment. Unfortunately, all four kittens are suffering from severe upper respiratory infections, veterinarians said, which are so significant the kittens may have to lose their eyes, which are particularly infected. The kittens are also extremely malnourished, and the shelter's veterinary team has been giving them care 24/7 just to keep them alive. "With the infection being so severe, the shelter's veterinary team is monitoring the situation closely as eye removal surgeries may be needed to prevent further deadly infection," the Society said in a news release. "Donations from the community are urgently needed to help these sick kittens continue to get the extensive medical care they desperately need." Donations are especially needed this time of year, the shelter said, because it's "kitten season" and Society employees expect to see hundreds more homeless kittens coming through their doors over the next few months. Last year, the Humane Society says it cared for over 2,000 kittens across Pierce County. Community members who want to help the four sick kittens can donate through the Humane Society's website— though be forewarned before clicking that link, the photos of the cats can be graphic. General donations for kittens in need can also be made at www.thehumanesociety.org/kitten-shower.
