Press release from New Roads School: March 8, 2022 We are excited to announce New Roads' next Critical Conversations event of the year taking place on Thursday, March 10 at 5 p.m., "Liberating the Cultural Narrative Through Artistic Expression" featuring contemporary artist, Mark Bradford. Recognized as one of the 100 most influential people by TIME magazine in 2021, he is best known for his utilization of found materials in abstract collage works that are indicative of the contexts he perceptively observes and lives within. "He is purposeful in how he dissects racism, homophobia, sexism, and poverty. In his philanthropy, he is similarly deliberate, developing innovative programs to support foster youth and bringing art to galleries in underserved neighborhoods," Time magazine said about Mark. Mark Bradford has explored issues of race, class, and gender in video, photography, sculpture, and installation. Through abstract art, Mark has disrupted, transcended, and critiqued the limitations of the traditional American narrative about marginalized communities, offering more complex social and political commentary from his inimitable vantage point. He is purposeful in how he dissects social phenomena such as racism, homophobia, sexism and poverty and the systemic inequities that perpetuate them. New Roads, an independent preparatory K-12 school based in Santa Monica, was established as a model for education in the ethnically, racially, culturally, and socio-economically diverse community of Los Angeles. Inclusivity and access are at the school's core and students are challenged daily to question their own worldview, assumptions, and perspectives. The school's Critical Conversations Speaker Series engages historians, scientists, scholars, activists, politicians, authors, and researchers in the most critical issues of today. This year, New Roads has expanded its Critical Conversations series nationally to a partner network of 44 public, private and charter schools. Participating schools in the Los Angeles area include Cassidy Preschool, Citizens of the World Charter School, Echo Horizon School, Evergreen Community School, Hollywood Schoolhouse, LAPP (LA Preschool Partnership), Los Encinos School, Mirman School, Ocean Charter School, SMMUSD, Turning Point School, UCLA Lab School and Untitled No. 1.
