SAN LEANDRO, CA — San Leandro Mayor Pauline Cutter joined mayors from all over the country in endorsing an emergency resolution supporting the Ukrainian people, and endorsing sanctions on Russia. "I'm proud to stand with the United States Conference of Mayors supporting Ukraine," Cutter wrote in a statement following her trip U.S Conference of Mayors Winter Leadership Meeting in Miami. "My fellow mayors and I heard from Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko and Ukraine Ambassador to US, Oksana Markarova - 'We just want our Country back.' The evils of one mad man will not prosper. The world is watching and acting by punching holes in his self-created darkness." On Friday, mayors from all over the country adopted an emergency resolution supporting Ukraine after hearing from Mayor Klitschko and the Ukrainian Ambassador the United States Oksana Markarova. The mayors also vowed to do whatever they could in their cities to help Ukraine. "America's mayors will take every action necessary to ensure that people of Russian origin in our cities will not be ostracized or discriminated against in any way as a result of the violent assault on Ukraine by the Russian government," the resolution reads. "The United States Conference of Mayors stands with the Ukrainian people and with the mayors of Ukraine in the defense of their sovereign nation, its democratic values, and their very lives." The full resolution can be read on the U.S. Conference of Mayors website. All over California, where 900,000 citizens claim some Ukrainian ancestry, citizens have been reaching out to help. In San Leandro, Ukrainian native Jena Dzitsiuk has started an organization called "Transform A Street Dog" to save, train, and transport street dogs from Ukraine to the United States. Dzitsiuk's own dog, Zoob, is a Ukrainian rescue. The Russian invasion has stranded 15 members of the team in Kyiv who are currently caring for about 40 dogs, often spending the night in makeshift bomb shelters. The nonprofit is raising money to hire drivers to transport them to the Ukrainian border. Donations are being collected on the organization's Facebook page.
