CALIFORNIA — A California company is recalling more than 1,600 pounds of ready-to-eat jerky products across Texas and seven other states because of Listeria concerns, the Department of Agriculture announced last week. Boyd Specialties LLC, based in Colton, California, recalled the jerky products after the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the threat when routine product testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes listeriosis. The recalled jerky products were produced on Feb. 23 and have the designation "EST. 40269" inside the USDA mark of inspection, according to the recall notice. The products were recalled in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas. Listeriosis primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns but also can cause negative reactions in people outside these at-risk groups. The infection can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. There have been no confirmed reports of illnesses or adverse reactions related to eating the recalled products, but officials are urging people experiencing illness or injury to see a doctor.
