Mixed Breed Dog Seeking Loving Home

Description

Seven-year-old Roscoe (a neutered male mixed breed dog, ~60 pounds) is in need of a new loving home. Roscoe loves his people and is sweet and affectionate with those he knows and trusts. He loves to be close to his people and to be petted. He is completely house trained and crate trained. Roscoe knows some basic commands – sit, down, look, wait, and leave it. He has been raised since he was a puppy in a family home and is used to spending time with people. He’s grown up with children and likes them as long as they are kind to him. Roscoe is a good watch dog. He’s protective of his space/yard and will bark when someone arrives. He can be intimidating at such times but has never bitten a person. (If you prefer to let your guests arrive in peace, simply crate him before they arrive and if you let him out 5 minutes after they get there, he’s much friendlier.) He loves spending time with me in the garden and has been known to harvest his own strawberries, blackberries, and even carrots! While Roscoe has grown up living with two other female dogs, he’s pretty reactive with dogs outside of his own pack. If you have other dogs, it may be possible to integrate Roscoe into your pack, but it would take time, patience, and care. Unfortunately Roscoe would not do well in a home with cats or other small indoor animals. We have ducks and chickens (separated from the dogs by a fence) and he doesn’t harass them through the fence at all, but if one got out I’m fairly certain he would kill it. He chases cats that come into our yard. While he has never bitten a person, he has recently attacked our small dog twice, which is what has led to the difficult decision to look for a new home. To be fair to Roscoe, the conditions that led to these two incidents were created by a child with special needs (the conditions could have been prevented, and we tried to prevent them for a long time, but the child's neurology made it impossible). Roscoe does tend to be anxious, and takes an inexpensive prescription anti-anxiety medication daily (costs about $10 for a 60 day supply at Costco). We also give him CBD oil daily. Roscoe has been with us since he was a puppy, and we love him very much. We are sad to let him go, but feel it is in his best interest (and that of the rest of our pets) for him to find a placement that better suits his needs and temperament. We will only consider placement with a person (or persons) who understand what it means to live with an anxious dog, and who understand (or want to learn) how best to help such a dog live as full a life as possible. If you're interested in meeting Roscoe and talking more in person, please reach out. Thank you.
