NEWPORT, RI — Visitors to Newport's historic mansions no longer need to show proof of vaccination. Masks will still be required in all properties owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County until March 21. The new policy reverses one that has been in place since late December, when Rhode Island was in the midst of a massive COVID-19 surge. At the time, the Preservation Society required that all visitors show proof of COVID-19 vaccination and, if eligible, a booster shot, upon entry to the historic properties. The requirement built on the previous mask requirement. The change comes as COVID-19 safety restrictions lift across Rhode Island, including the expiration of the statewide public mask requirement and the end of the mask mandate in schools. As a result, many private businesses and organizations are loosening their mask or vaccine requirements, as well.
