PITTSBURGH, PA — The Steelers search for a successor to the recently retired Ben Roethlisberger will not lead them to Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson. The team reportedly was interested in Rodgers, the Green Bay Packers quarterback, but reports Tuesday indicated he and the Packers have reached a historic contract agreement. Wilson, meanwhile, will be traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos, according to multiple reports. Rodgers has agreed on a new four-year, $200 million contract extension that will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history, according to multiple reports. Approximately $153 million of that is guaranteed. The deal would keep Rodgers in Green Bay until he is 42, presumably the remainder of his career. The Steelers likely would have not have been willing to surrender the draft capital the Broncos did to acquire Wilson, also one of the league's best quarterbacks. Denver gave up two first-round draft picks, two-second round draft picks, a fifth round pick and three players in exchange for Wilson and a fourth-round pick. The Steelers reportedly were one of the teams interested in acquiring Rodgers if he opted out of Green Bay, but now they have to move in another direction. The in-house options include Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins, possibilities that do not excite fans and have not been supported publicly by any player currently on the team. The Steelers have been linked to college prospects such as Pitt's Kenny Pickett and Liberty's Malik Willis, but both of those players likely will be drafted before the Steelers make their first-round pick next month. Free agents Mitchell Trubisky of the Buffalo Bills and Jameis Winston of the New Orleans Saints have been mentioned as possible Steelers targets. So has San Francisco 49ers starter Jimmy Garoppolo, who reportedly is on the trade market. Be the first to know what's happening in your community and region.
