ELMHURST, IL — An Elmhurst Patch commenter speculated last week that crime would increase locally over a weekend that featured the St. Patrick's Day parade.
"What's the over/under on drunk and disorderly, public intoxication, DUI arrests in Elmhurst this Saturday?" the resident wrote. "We got the first St Pat's parade in two years, 70-degree weather and the masks are off. My guess is 10 arrests between 12 noon on Saturday and 4:00 am Sunday morning."
It looks like the resident would have lost money on his bet.
The police reported six DUI arrests over the weekend. Only one occurred during the resident's timeframe — about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
No arrests for public intoxication or disorderly conduct were made over the weekend, according to police reports.
The parade, which started at noon, attracted thousands of people. It was the first local St. Patrick's parade since early March 2020, just before the pandemic.
"Last Saturday was a very remarkable day for Elmhurst post-pandemic," Mayor Scott Levin told the City Council on Monday. "I think it had some record numbers. (Police) chief tells me 'not record problems.' Very well-behaved, family-oriented crowd."
The mayor joked, "Fortunately, we had the weather service deliver fine weather and then rain to get everyone to go home."
Levin and City Manager Jim Grabowski thanked the parade organizers.
"I also want to thank the city staff, who all had something to do with that," Grabowski said. "I believe it touches every department. I hope everyone had fun there."
